India and OIC

Sir, — V. Kameswaran, in his letter on the above topic (Nov. 25), sounds somewhat let down by India's failure to be admitted as a member of the OIC and he has pointed an accusing finger at Pakistan and its then dictator, Yahya Khan, for foiling India's vigorous attempts in this regard.

But, V. Nagarajan, in his letter on the same subject (Nov. 19), had raised a valid point in questioning the very propriety of India seeking to join the OIC after having declared itself a secular nation. In my view, even if India were a majority Muslim country, by virtue of voluntarily calling itself a secular state, it could not have sought, in good conscience, membership of an organisation based on a sole religion.

S.S. Manivannan,
Chennai
