Abduction crisis

Sir, — The Editorial `The Abduction Crisis' and the `Money, er-Mani' cartoon (Nov. 26) beautifully sum up the forest brigand Veerappan's blackmail approach.

It is a sad commentary on the powers-that-be that they have allowed the brigand to go scot-free for such a long period. There is a vast network of State and Central security forces which have sophisticated equipment at their disposal; yet one fails to understand how such cassettes from Veerappan are delivered at regular intervals and how the "scent" of the route is not followed for his capture.

There are strong denials of payments of a huge ransom to the brigand. Why then should Veerappan ask for a negotiator of his choice to be sent?

R. Thiruvengadam,
Chennai

* * *

Sir, — I for one believe only the Army can catch Veerappan. Army paratroopers, fully equipped to survive in the forest, can be airdropped into the forest in the night to nab the outlaw and his accomplices. Such an exercise will also provide valuable training to the personnel in covert forest operations and survival techniques.

K.V. Sunderam,
Coimbatore
