Only a handful responsible for dissidence: BJP

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW Oct. 22. The Bharatiya Janata Party today decided to get tough with the rebel legislators who have been publicly ridiculing the party leadership for its selection of Ministers from among the BJP MLAs in the Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh Government.

A meeting of the BJP State coordination committee here felt that the dissidents had been responsible for tarnishing the party image and that it warranted immediate action.

Speaking to newspersons after the meeting, the State BJP vice-president, Satya Deo Singh, said that most of the MLAs, whose names had appeared in the list of "dissidents," had met important party functionaries and expressed their loyalty.

The meeting was attended, among others, by the State BJP president, Vinay Katiyar, the leader of the legislature group, Lalji Tandon, the party leader in the Legislative Council, Nepal Singh, Kalraj Mishra, Ram Prakash Tripathi and Harish Chandra Srivastava.

While the dissident leader, Ganga Bhakt Singh, had claimed the support of 25 MLAs and seven MLCs, the leadership felt that only a handful of "disgruntled legislators" were responsible for the tirade against the party.

In another important development, the Rashtriya Lok Dal MLA, Samarpal Singh, demanded that his party withdraw support to the Mayawati Government which had "failed" to fulfil the aspirations of the RLD.

Talking to presspersons, Mr. Singh targeted two Ministers of his party — Kokab Hameed and Anuradha Chaudhary — who had shied away from supporting a private member resolution in the last session of the State Assembly which sought to create a separate Harit Pradesh comprising the western district of U.P.

Their reluctance had damaged the credibility of the Union Minister, Ajit Singh, as leader of the RLD.
