11 killed in cracker unit fire in Villupuram dt.

VILLUPURAM OCT.22. In a major fire accident, 11 persons who were trapped in a cracker-manufacturing unit at Mittamandagapattu in Villupuram district died on Tuesday evening.

All the 8 injured— 4 women and an equal numbe1 of men— were admitted to the Pondicherry Government Hospital, the police said.

The thatched structure, where crackers were manufactured under licence, caught fire around 7 p.m.

A loud noise was heard and a section of workers was thrown out of the unit.

Fire-fighting units from Madugarai in Pondicherry controlled the blaze around 8.30 p.m.
