Coastal Shelter Programme for Karaikal

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry Oct. 22. A plan to plant trees on the coastal belt under the Coastal Shelter programme would be implemented soon in the Karaikal region, the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam has said.

The Minister, who planted a sapling at a function organised by the Department of Forests and Wildlife as part of `Vana Mahotsavam' at a government higher secondary school in Oulgaret near here today, said the Agriculture department in collaboration with the Forests department had been launching several programmes to promote tree-planting.

Karaikal had been declared a drought-hit region. Funds had been sought from the Centre to manage the situation. An expert team of officials had also visited the region for assessment of the drought situation. Vadhanur and a few other pockets had been taken up for planting of trees.

Mr. Namassivayam distributed prizes to 32 students who took part in various contests held in the Union Territory as part of Vana Mahotsavam.
