Man held for 'killing' wife

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI OCT. 22. The arrest of a man, who allegedly murdered his 24-year-old wife for dowry about a month ago, was made public yesterday only after her freedom fighter father organised a press conference to expose the insensitivity of the police towards his plight and their connivance with the accused.

Uma, the daughter of Chhotey Lal, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Pawan, for dowry at Dabri in South-West Delhi on September 25 night. Despite Chhotey Lal's complaint, the police had not registered any case and allegedly tried to hush up the matter.

A resident of Pappan Kalan, Chhotey Lal said Uma, married to Pawan -- a property dealer -- in 1997, was found dead in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital by her relatives on September 26, while none of her in-laws was present there. Chhotey Lal, who was then not in the city, said the police informed his family of the death in the morning, whereas they were told that Uma had been admitted at 1 a.m.

``What happened in between,'' he asked, adding that soon after her death, Pawan went missing. The police said they had reports that Uma, who was pregnant then, fell unconscious after she ate pickles and she died around 9 a.m. Later, the doctor reportedly disclosed that Uma died of cardiac arrest. Chhotey Lal alleged that it was a fake medical report. "Despite efforts, the police did not take any action against Pawan.

They offered to compromise,'' he said. On the other hand, Pawan, who had gone missing, kept making calls threatening his family with dire consequences if they pursued the matter.

The issue was finally taken up by the Akhil Bharatiya Uttarakhand Samaj Kalyan Sangthan, who organised the press conference. Just hours after the conference, the police issued a release through the Sub-Inspector (Press) that Pawan was arrested on Saturday.

Another dowry case

A former director of the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy was arrested along with his wife and doctor son at Punjabi Bagh in West Delhi yesterday for alleged dowry death of his daughter-in-law on Saturday. On the fateful day, the police received a call that a woman, Dipti, hanged herself to death at her in-laws' Shivaji Park residence. When the police reached there, they found the body lying on the bed, following which her body was sent for post- mortem and an inquiry under the area Sub-Divisional Magistrate was ordered, as Dipti had got married in January last year.

She had a nine-month-old child. After submission of the SDM report, the police yesterday arrested Dipti's husband, Dr. Pallav Beri, his father, Kailash Beri, and his mother, Ajita.
