Kolathur Mani case: Special Prosecutor resigns

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Oct. 22. In a sudden development, the Special Prosecutor, Nagaraj, appointed by the Karnataka Government to conduct cases involving Kolathur Mani (now in Bellary jail) on the charge of supplying weapons to the forest brigand Veerappan has resigned.

The Government has appointed H.M. Thimmarayappa in his place. Mr. Nagaraj had not consulted the Law Minister, D.B. Chandre Gowda, before resigning though he had been appointed to the post only after obtaining his consent, it is stated.

Meanwhile, the bail application by Mani whom Veerappan had suggested as an emissary to negotiate the release of the JD(U) leader and former Minister, Nagappa, contrary to expectations, did not figure in the cause list in the High Court on Tuesday.

This and the failure of Veerappan to respond to the message aired on AIR by Ponnachi Mahadevaswamy if he could contact him alone as emissary has put the Government in a tight spot with pressure building up from the JD(U) and the family of Mr. Nagappa who are sore that the Government is not making adequate efforts for the release of the hostage, who was abducted nearly two months ago.
