CII-SR institutes SHE award

CHENNAI OCT. 22. The Confederation of Indian Industry-Southern Region (CII-SR) has instituted CII Leadership and Excellence Awards in Safety, Health and Environment (SHE), for which nominations for the first year will be invited shortly.

Announcing this at a press conference held here yesterday in connection with the two-day Enviro 2002 conclave scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Chennai, the Chairman of the CII-SR Environment Sub-Committee, Rajiv Varma, (Works Manager, Nicholas Piramal) said while the awards instituted by organisations like the National Safety Council were based mainly on past performance in respect of SHE, the CII's criteria would emphasise involvement of employees in the conception and execution of projects in the SHE areas, innovativeness of the projects and effectiveness of the ideas in terms of results, irrespective of whether the ideas were big or small.

The awards, to be based on evaluation of specific SHE projects, would help promote a culture of conscious striving and excellence in safety, occupational health and environmental protection in both manufacturing and service industries like hotels and hospitals and not reward businesses whose good record could have been a matter of chance. A total of five SHE awards would be given to the successful nominees among industries (both large and medium) either based in or operating from the four Southern States and Pondicherry and having completed three years of operations, Mr. Varma added.

Environment conclave: The Chairman of the Enviro 2002 conference on "Environmental Challenges and Solutions", V. R. Pappu (Technical Adviser, Ashok Leyland), said sessions devoted to product life cycle and risks (covering automobiles, paints and plastics, environment risk management and environment insurance) and presentations on best practices and initiatives in pollution control by heads/representatives of the Pollution Control Boards of the southern States would be among features of the conference. Air and odour management, a new theme, would be covered by one session, while other sessions would deal with technologies of water management, climate change, CPCB initiatives and bio-remediation, recycle and recovery.

Mr. Pappu said under an initiative taken by the CII-SR along with the State government, a Hazardous Waste Association had been formed and proposals to attract private investment in waste management had reached the stage of shortlisting of service providers at a site to be finalised for disposal of hazardous wastes.
