Scientist-student session on Saturday

By Our Staff Correspondent

Manipal Oct. 22. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of MAHE, P.V.Bhandary, has said that the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) will organise the fifth Scientists Students Interaction Programme (SSIP) at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) on Saturday.

He told presspersons here on Monday that the SSIP would be organised for high school students of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. As many as 250 students from 20 high schools each from the two districts under the "Mahiti Sindhu'' would participate in the SSIP. The SSIP would be held in Kannada and English. The programme would last three to four hours. The KSCST identified experts from institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science and others, who participated in these programmes as resource persons. This provided a unique opportunity to students from rural areas to meet eminent scientists and get their doubts cleared. As many as 15 resource persons had been identified for the SSIP at Manipal.

The Government had initiated a number of programmes to popularise science and technology activities in the State. The objective of these programmes was to inculcate a spirit of scientific curiosity among youngsters by way of spreading the message of science and technology and also to attract them to study pure Science disciplines at the collegiate level.

To improve the quality of education in the State especially in rural areas, it was felt necessary to introduce effective programmes in schools and colleges. This would help create awareness in students and improve their career. The KSCST in association with the Commissioner of Public Instruction had taken the decision to conduct the SSIP.

The objectives of the SSIP were to promote active involvement of teachers and students in scientific activity, to encourage students to ask questions and doubts in science and promote their participation and to enable students to know about the latest development in the fields of science and technology. Students could ask questions on diverse subjects such as astronomy, medicine, physics, biology, computers, ecology, chemistry and others.

The KSCST had organised four SSIP programmes in Mysore, Hubli, Davangere and Tumkur for students of Mysore, Chamrajanagar, Hubli, Gadag, Haveri, Davangere and Tumukur districts. As many as 745 students from 269 schools in eight districts participated in them. As many as 31 experts/scientists took part.

It had been planned to conduct 12 programmes during this year — one programme every month, Prof. Bhandary said.

Krishnamurthy, Srikanteshwar Swamy and K.V.Rao were present.
