Letters to the Editor
Sir, The ascendance of the religious right in the political arena in India and Pakistan is frightening (Editorial, Oct. 21). Religions of various hues are rooted in the past. Almost all are discriminatory to parts of human society. Democratic values professing equal rights to all are alien to them. It is no wonder that in the eyes of the bigots the problems of hunger and unemployment become insignificant in comparison to cow slaughter, pig eating and the like. Religions are relics of the past and as Afghanistan has demonstrated, political power to clerics will take us to the dark ages. It is important that the authorities notify a uniform civil code without any delay and push all religions to the confines of individual homes and shrines.
