A cure for behavioural abnormalities

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI OCT. 9. Together they constitute nearly 40 per cent of the 1,000 million population and at least 10-12 per cent of these under-18 suffer from abnormalities in behaviour and development.

And it is this very handicap that the Vidyasagar Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (VIMHANS) along with the World Health Organisation (WHO) is hoping to erase under their Expression-2002 programme at a seminar "Bridge Course in Child Development for Teachers'' at VIMHANS.

The two-day programme was attended by mental health professionals, teachers, school counsellors and employees from the government, voluntary and self-help groups.

Expression 2002, a school-based pilot project on holistic health, is providing a platform to the 22 schools in the Capital, who have recognised the need to have "educated'' counsellors at school, for even primary school students. The focus will be on the integration of biological, behavioural and socio-cultural factors in understanding child development. ``Children go through the development stages and face a range of tasks, which are prominent in each of these phases. Failure in these development stages can lead to occurrence of problem behaviour. What we are aiming at is the integration of the problem children into the mainstream. We cannot allow these children to be pulled out of conventional education system ,'' explains Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, psychiatrist, VIMHANS. The programme is to be later followed up by a capsule for the principals of schools.
