CPI(M) to discuss Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 9. Having taken the lead in bringing together opposition parties to take on the BJP as one force in the Gujarat Assembly polls, the CPI (M) now plans to give the move further impetus. Over the next two days, beginning tomorrow the CPI (M) politburo would deliberate in Kolkata on how to translate the strategy into action. The party is clear that it is now for the Congress to organise the show and carry all Opposition parties together.

The CPI(M) had set the ball rolling with its parliamentary party leader, Somnath Chatterjee hosting a dinner meet during the monsoon session of Parliament where a broad understanding was arrived at. The meeting was attended by the Congress, the CPI, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Nationalist Congress Party.

It is another matter that the Samajwadi Party, which prefers to do business with the Congress separately, has been raising doubts about the `intention' of the Congress to accommodate the SP. The CPI(M) politburo member, Sitaram Yechury told The Hindu, today that at the two-day meeting apart from Gujarat, the party would also discuss the post-Assembly election scenario in Jammu and Kashmir, the need to check communalism, economic policies of the Vajpayee Government. The changing face of the economy in the wake of the reforms process and its effect on trade union activities has made the party to take a close look at its work in the field.
