In an official release, the Director (in-charge) of Collegiate Education said that in spite of the sincere steps taken by the Government to redress the grievances of teachers and students, the teachers had been on an indefinite strike from October 8 which action, he said was not `justifiable'. In view of the coming university supplementary and semester examinations and in the interest of students studying in Government colleges, the Government appealed to the teachers to resume their work as a substantial number of working days had already been lost, affecting the students. From the reports received from principals, "it was clear that the strike had invoked poor response and 63 out of 67 government colleges had functioned normally as most of the teachers conducted classes. In Chennai, the strike had no impact at all and all colleges functioned normally with a majority of students attending classes", the Director(in-charge) said. He appealed to the teachers to withdraw their strike.
