Govt. ignoring farmers in Krishna Basin: Vaijnath

By Our Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA Oct. 9. The President of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Horata Samiti (HKHS), Vaijnath Patil, today accused the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, and his ministerial colleagues of adopting a step-motherly attitude while dealing with problems of the Krishna Basin farmers while giving preferential treatment to the Cauvery Basin farmers.

Referring to the agitation in the Cauvery Basin and the support of all political parties to the State Government's decision not to release water to Tamil Nadu, Mr. Patil told presspersons here that although the HKHS endorsed the stand of the Government, Mr. Krishna and those supporting the agitation in the Cauvery Basinshould not be under the illusion that "Cauvery was Karnataka". There was a much bigger Krishna Basin which required immediate attention of the Government. He said that while the State Government defied the Supreme Court directions on the Cauvery issue, the same zeal was not shown on the issue of the height of the Alamatti Dam.

Mr. Patil recalled the apology tendered by the Chief Minister to the Supreme Court on a contempt petition filed by Andhra Pradesh over a statement issued by Mr. Krishna on the height of the dam.

He said that the Chief Minister should immediately visit the submerged areas in Bagalkot and ensure that the affected people were properly rehabilitated, give more attention on the long-pending irrigation projects in the Krishna Basin, and utilise the State's share as allocated in the Bachawat Award.

He criticised the Union Government for the delay in amending Article 371 of the Constitution providing for special reservation in jobs and in education to people of backward regions. The delay was harming the prospects of unemployed youths in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, he said. Mr. Patil said that unemployed youths, who were denied special reservation in the appointment of teachers for high schools and primary schools recently, would again be affected in the recruitment of 4,000 posts in the Health Department. To ensure justice to the unemployed youth in the region, the Government should freeze the appointments and fill these posts on contract basis. The regular appointments could be made after Article 371 was amended. The General Secretary, HKHS, Hanumanthrao Desai, charged that some influential persons were behind the murder of the Congress leader, Earanna Yenkanchi.
