Anti-U.S. protest

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Oct. 9. The U.S. Ambassador in India, Robert D. Blackwill, faced protests from a group of political activists here today.

The demonstration was led by Mohammed Amanullah Khan, former MLA and president of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek, and Moulana Naseeruddin, president of the Tahaffuz-e-Shayar-e-Islami and their followers when the U.S. envoy was heading for the hill-top Falaknuma Palace in the Old City of Hyderabad.

They protested what they called the ``anti-Islamic'' policies of the Bush administration and raised slogans against the U.S. President, George Bush, and the Secretary of State, Colin Powell, and condemned the Israeli attacks on Palestine, the ``genocide'' in Afghanistan and the U.S. campaign against Iraq.

Police said the Blackwill convoy slowed down and moved on when the protestors tried to stop it while Mr. Khan claimed that the envoy's car was detained for about 15 minutes. Security was stepped up for the other programmes of Mr. Blackwill, who is on a private visit.
