A special hundred for Hooper

By Mohandas Menon

** West Indian Carl Hooper, who made his Test debut at this ground in December 1987, became the sixth West Indian and the 27th player overall to appear in 100 Tests. Hooper becomes the third player to make debut and appear in 100th Test at the same venue.

Australian Allan Border and Pakistani Javed Miandad played their debut as well as 100th Tests at Melbourne and Lahore respectively. However,

Hooper's feat is unique since his was in an away Test.

** The 201-run partnership between Sanjay Bangar and Virender Sehwag was the best for India against the West Indies for the first wicket, which betters the 153-run stand between Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan at this very ground in December 1978.

** The Sehwag-Bangar partnership was also the best for the first wicket in any Test in Bombay/Mumbai (including the only Test at the Gymkhana ground and 17 Tests at the Brabourne Stadium). The previous best was the 192 runs by Gavaskar and Chauhan against Australia in November 1979.

** This was India's fifth 200-plus partnership for the first wicket. The last one was the 200-run stand by Gavaskar and K. Srikkanth against Pakistan in February 1987 at Chepauk.

** This was the seventh 200-plus partnership against the West Indies in Tests. The last was the 219-run stand by the Pakistani pair of Mohammad Wasim and Imran Nazir at Bridgetown in May 2000.

** Bangar's wicket was Mervyn Dillon's 50th in 14 away Tests.

** Sehwag (147), playing his 10th Test, recorded his third century and the highest score of his career. His previous highest was the 106 he made

against England at Nottingham in August this year.

** Sehwag also became the second Indian, after Hemu Adhikari (114 not out at Delhi in November 1948) to register a century on first appearance against the West Indies.

** Sachin Tendulkar, when on 14, became the third batsman after Rahul Dravid (1106 runs in 12 matches) and Englishman Michael Vaughan (1031 runs in 10 matches) to aggregate 1000-plus runs during this calendar year.

Tendulkar now has 1021 runs in 12 matches.

** Tendulkar also took his run tally at the Wankhede Stadium to 666 runs in 6 matches. He went past the tally of 631 runs held by Dilip Vengsarkar in 10 matches. Now only Gavaskar, 1122 runs in 11 matches, has more runs than Tendulkar at this venue.
