Send Nedumaran, Mani: Veerappan

By K.V. Subramanya

BANGALORE SEPT. 5. The forest brigand, Veerappan, who sent a cassette today to the Karnataka Chief Minister, S. M. Krishna, has urged him to send the Tamilar Desiya Iyakkam leader, P. Nedumaran, and the Tamil activist, Kolathur Mani, to the forest to brief them on his demands for the release of the former Karnataka Minister, H. Nagappa.

Sources told The Hindu that the cassette was played at a top-level meeting attended by the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Security Adviser to the Government, T. Sreenivasulu, and others. Veerappan had also demanded that the Special Task Force, which has cordoned off the area where he is hiding, be withdrawn immediately. The cassette was in Tamil and contained a message from Mr. Nagappa.

The former Minister had appealed to Mr. Krishna to fulfil the two demands made by the fugitive, saying the situation was so grim that it was difficult even to fetch food and other necessities. And Veerappan had said that he would communicate his demands only through Mr. Nedumaran and Mr. Mani. Another cassette had been received by Mr. Nagappa's family at Kamagere but its contents were not known, the sources said. It is said to be in the possession of the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police, V. V. Bhaskar, camping in Gundal. The contents of the two cassettes would be compared and a decision taken tomorrow. The cassette sent to Mr. Nagappa's family was posted at Bidadi in Bangalore rural district while the cassette to Mr. Krishna was posted at the General Post Office here. Veerappan had apparently acknowledged Mr. Mani's message over the radio on Tuesday, in which he had appealed for Mr. Nagappa's release.
