Surya TV case: KJU to move High Court

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM July 15. The Kerala Journalist Union (KJU) has decided to approach the High Court against the alleged harassment of Surya Television employees by the Police Department.

In a statement here on Sunday, the KJU president, Roy Mathew, accused the police of singling out and targeting Surya TV for reporting the existence of a purported intelligence document detailing the alleged involvement of the Fisheries Minister, K.V. Thomas, in a Rs 336-crore hawala deal. Mr. Roy said that several mainstream newspapers and television channels had picked up the story and put it in print and relayed it on air.

However, the Government had chosen to target Surya TV for reasons best known to the powers that be.

Mr. Roy said that P.C. George, MLA, and the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, had claimed to be in possession of the said document, which the police say was forged.

He said the KJU apprehended a situation where the Surya TV reporter, Anil Nambiar, would be arrested and tortured by the Crime Branch for eliciting a forced confession that would please those in power.

The KJU has petitioned the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, the Director General of Police, K. J. Joseph, and the Additional Director General of Police (Crimes), M.G.A Raman, regarding the same.
