Karnataka

The Kannada Film Producers' Association president, Basanth Kumar Patil, told The Hindu on Monday that the bandh was supported by all wings of the film industry, including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and non-Kannada film distributors. All film-making activities such as shooting, recording, and release of new films would be stopped until the issue was settled. The association was forced to call for a bandh following the "biased attitude" of a section of exhibitors who controlled important cinemas on K.G. Road in fixing rentals for Kannada films, and "exploitation" of Kannada film producers and distributors. Even the chamber's suggestion to give 26 to 28 per cent concession on rentals for Kannada films was treated with scant respect by the exhibitors Although the Tamil film, Panchathanthiram, was released in only four cinemas in Chennai, it had been accommodated in 22 centres here. This reflected the "anti-Kannada attitude" of these exhibitors, he said. The stand of Kannada film industry was justified by the immediate response with the Minister for Information, Kagodu Timmappa, promising action in the matter.
