Hurdles to peace

Sir, — Your Editorial ``Conflicting political signals'' (July 11) has raised a question on the Andhra Pradesh Government's sincerity in bringing the decades-long naxalite tangle to an end even as it took a critical look at the banned outfit People's War Group's strategy of not toning down its hardline approach in the just-failed phase of dialogue with the Government.

The real reasons for the persisting menace are ``mutual suspicion and pervasive mistrust,'' as you correctly said.

This has reportedly led the PWG to gear itself for more dreadful acts and police to resort to so-called ``encounters'' in self-defence.

It is thus clear from the happenings that there are ``trigger happy'' elements on both sides and despite the Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu's professed yearning for peace, the environment is allowed to be vitiated further and the much-wanted peace for the people of Telengana continues to be as elusive as it was before.

B. V. Kumar,

Nellore
