35 more fly-overs for Delhi

NEW DELHI APRIL 29 . As many as 22 fly-overs have been completed in Delhi since 1999 and 35 more are on the anvil, the Rajya Sabha was told today.

Replying to supplementaries during question hour, the Urban Development Minister, Ananth Kumar, said government was considering introduction of rewards for expeditious completion of flyovers and penalties for delay.

In reply to a query from B. P. Singhal (BJP) on delays and cost over-runs in construction of flyovers in Delhi, Mr. Kumar said one of the main reasons was the multiplicity of agencies implementing the project. Besides the Government of Delhi, Public Works Department, Delhi Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Committee and Delhi Tourism Development Corporation were involved in the construction of flyovers in Delhi, Mr. Kumar said. The issue of construction of flyovers in Mumbai also came up for a brief discussion with Congress member Suresh Kalmadi saying it was done in a "haphazard'' manner. -- PTI
