Southern States - Karnataka-Bangalore

200 toilet complexes to be built in City

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE April 29. The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, on Monday announced that 200 more modern toilet complexes, to provide affordable and upgraded sanitation to the urban poor in Bangalore, would be constructed.

He made the announcement at the launch of a sanitation movement, the first phase of "Nirmala Bangalore" project, under which 24 modern "pay-and-use" toilets were dedicated to the City.

He said the City's growing population needed a public sanitation system that was easily accessible, affordable, and user-friendly. The proposed 200 toilets were in addition to the 100 Nirmala Bangalore toilets being constructed, he added.

While the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) would take up construction of 100 toilets within its limits, the Karnataka State Slum Clearance Board and the Bangalore Agenda Task Force (BATF) would build 100 toilets in slums, he said.

He wanted all civic bodies such as the KSRTC, the BMTC, the BDA, the BWSSB, the KPTCL, and the Police Department to ensure that the sites identified by the agencies executing the project were allotted at the earliest.

Mr. Krishna welcomed private-public partnership in upgrading sanitation facilities, and said their proper maintenance was essential. Although the City already had more than 100 toilets built by the BMP, they had become unfit for use due to poor maintenance, he pointed out. He directed the Police Commissioner, H.T. Sangliana, to ensure security at the Nirmala Bangalore sites. He said: "During my inspection of the new toilets at a few places, I found that miscreants had already stolen taps and other accessories. To avoid this, put up wire mesh around the toilets.''

He felicitated Sudha Murthy of the Infosys Foundation for donating Rs. 8 crore for constructing 100 Nirmala Bangalore toilets.

He wanted philanthropists to assist in the development of the State.

``Ms. Sudha Murthy's generous offer towards an upgraded sanitation system for the urban poor is really appreciable. We need more people like her. It's no surprise that she has been selected to represent India at an international conference to be held in the UN shortly,'' he said.

Earlier, Mr. Krishna inspected the new toilet complexes at Shivajinagar, Mayo Hall, Museum Road, Mission Road, and Ramanna Garden slum at Sudhamanagar. He also laid the foundation stone for a toilet complex in the premises of Vani Vilas Hospital.

Besides the Minister of State for Bangalore City Development, T. John, and the Mayor, K. Chandrashekar, the BMP Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivas Murthy, the BATF member, Kalpana Kar, and Ms. Sudha Murthy spoke.

On the occasion, the investiture ceremony of Suchi Mitras — citizen volunteers for the Swachha Bangalore programme — was held.
