Ravi Varma Award given to Devan

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 29. The Governor, Sikandar Bakht, has observed that art, culture and literature have had a major impact on the social and political life of Kerala.

Presenting the `Raja Ravi Varma Puraskaram', instituted by the Department of Culture of the Government of Kerala, to the renowned painter and sculptor, M.V. Devan, at a colourful function held at the Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan in the city, this evening, he said that an artist, through his creation, quenched the thirst of the soul.

It was the first public function in the State that Mr. Bakht attended after assuming the office of the Governor.

Mr. Devan was an artist with a difference who promoted art zealously with a mission and a vision, Mr. Bakht said.

Presiding over the function, G. Karthikeyan, the Minister for Cultural Affairs, said that Ravi Varma had not been given the recognition due to him. Replying to felicitations, Mr. Devan said that like Swami Vivekananda, Raja Ravi Varma too was instrumental in taking India to the West.

Mr. Devan said that the cash prize of Rs. one lakh, that formed part of the `puraskaram', would be shared between the M.Govindan Foundation and the Kerala Kalapeetom in Kochi for improving the functioning of both.
