`Head constable staged suicide bid'

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 29. An official enquiry has found no truth in the allegation of an Armed Reserve Head Constable, P. Rajasekharan, that he had been forced to attempt suicide due to harassment by his superior officials.

Mr. Rajasekharan had been admitted to the Medical College Hospital here with injuries sustained when he allegedly tried to commit suicide in the barracks on the night of April 26.

In a written complaint to the City Commissioner of Police, Rajan Singh, he had said that he had tried to take his own life due to harassment by an Armed Reserve SI.

Mr. Singh told The Hindu that an inquiry conducted by the Assistant Commissioner (Narcotic Cell) had found that the "suicide'' attempt was a ploy by Mr. Rajasekharan to dodge disciplinary action for having assaulted the Armed Reserve SI, Abdul Wahab, in the rest room on April 24, due to previous enmity.

Mr. Singh said that at around 10.30 a.m. on that day, Mr. Rajasekharan had gone up to the SI, saluted him and then slapped him. The Head Constable had then run away and later staged the "suicide'' attempt fearing action against him.

On August 8 last year, Mr. Wahab had caught the Head Constable sleeping in the guard room while on duty, Mr. Singh said. The Head Constable, who was under the influence of liquor, had abused the SI, following which had been placed under suspension.

Mr. Singh said action, if any, would be taken against Mr. Rajasekharan after his discharge from hospital.
