K.Thimappa, Vice-Chancellor of the university, told presspersons here on Monday that the university's Syndicate had appointed a sub-committee, headed by K.Sreenivasan, former Director General of Police, to inquire into the discrepancy and to identify the people responsible for this. The sub-committee would submit its report shortly, he said. In one case, pertaining to II B.A. languages unit of the April 2001 examination, it was found that the student was awarded 35 marks in the final marks list, while no marks were entered in the tabulated marks list. When university officials probed the issue, they found that the actual marks awarded in the answer script were 21. This discrepancy came to light when the student applied for the marks card after six months, he said. In another instance, a bundle of unchecked answer scripts of I B.Com. (Business Management) examination was found in a dustbin. Though none of these papers were valued, marks had been awarded to students in the final marks list. There might be 1,000 such cases of malpractice in the B.A. and B.Com. discipline, according to the university authorities. Based on the sub-committee report, the university would decide whether to annul the II B.A. and I B.Com. (Business Management) results and conduct revaluation. Criminal cases would be initiated against the people involved and disciplinary action would be taken against persons from the university, after the report was submitted, he added.
