No more delegations to Centre: Krishna

By Our Staff Correspondent

Belgaum April 29 . "No, no more delegations, it is only a waste of money.'' This was how the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, expressed his aversion to sending delegations from the State to the Centre to seek additional funds for relief work in areas affected by natural calamities.

Mr. Krishna, who was here to attend the eighth State-level Advocates Conference on Monday, told presspersons that the Government had been sending delegations to the Centre seeking funds to take up relief measures but only in vain. "The Centre has never given in the past, neither will it give it to us (Congress Government) now,'' he said and added that it was only in the case of Orissa where the Centre had shown some charity, he said.

Mr. Krishna said his Government would study the report submitted by the G.K.Veeresh Committee which inquired into the issue of farmers committing suicide. The report would be placed before the Cabinet soon. Whatever the decision, it would be made applicable to the "contingencies" occurring now and then. And till the Government took a decision, whatever development took place would be looked into. When his attention was drawn to his party President, Sonia Gandhi, criticising the Telugu Desam Party Government in Andhra Pradesh for not showing concern for the plight of similar victims of drought and debt, he said, "if the party President takes a certain stand publicly and if it is opposed to the policies pursued by the State Government, we will make amends to that extent."

On the possibilities of the Government showing concern for weavers, who too were attempting suicide due to debt and losses, he said it (Government) would certainly study the matter.
