Pak. objects to testing of Brahmos

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD April 29. Pakistan has expressed serious concern over the flight testing of the Brahmos missile and said the introduction of the new weapons system would amount to Russia violating its international obligations as a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime, (MTCR).

In a press statement here the Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman, Aziz Ahmed Khan, said that Islamabad had taken a serious note of the introduction of the Brahmos as it ``aggravated the existing balance'' in the region and would further encourage India in its ``hegemonic designs''.

``It should also be a matter of great concern that the Indo-Russian cooperation in development of missile is in clear violation of the international obligations of Russian as member of MTCR.''

In response to a question on how it amounted to a violation of the MTCR by Russia, Mr. Khan said the regime prohibited the development of certain missile technology and passing it on to others. ``This particular test and cooperation is in violation of that treaty,'' he said and urged the MTCR members to take action against the violators.

Pakistan would take necessary steps to ``ensure a strong defence capability to deter any aggressive designs against its sovereignty and territorial integrity,'' Mr. Khan said and added that it would remain committed to a policy of restraint.
