In a statement here today, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Forest Minister's statements on the subject were proof that he was unwilling to take any concrete stand on the issue. The Forest Minister who had gone back on his initial enthusiasm was now accusing him (Mr. Achuthanandan) of abetting forest encroachment in Mathikettan. His silence on forest poaching in the Mathikettan area despite his being a member of the Cabinet sub-committee on allotment of land to Adivasis, clearly showed the double standards that he was pursuing. Both the Chief Minister and the Revenue Minister were even now insisting that the dense forest in Mathikettan is revenue land. But the Forest Minister, who had initially sought total control of the land in question, was maintaining a studied silence on the issue, he pointed out. Mr. Achuthanandan also took exception to the Forest Minister's allegation that the CPI(M) was encroaching into forestland. This was meant only to shield the Revenue Minister and his relatives who had encroached into the Mathikettan forest tracts, the Opposition Leader said.
