The Industry Minister, P. K. Kunhalikutty, said here today that the State Government would expedite the work on the implementation of the Centrally sponsored scheme, Assistance to States for Infrastructure Development for Exports. Inaugurating the State-Level Export Promotion Committee (SLEPC), set up under the scheme, the Minister said the State Government was committed to creating a conducive atmosphere for investments in the proposed industrial zones. The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, V. Krishna Moorthy, the Principal Secretary (Industry), John Mathai, the Kinfra Managing Director, G.C. Gopala Pillai, CSEZ director, Paul Antony and D.V. Prasad of the MPEDA. Representatives of the Seafood Exporters Association, Director General of Foreign Trade, RBI, STPI, Technopark, Malabar Chambers of Commerce and officials of banks, export promotion councils and commodity boards attended the meeting. Mr. John Mathai, explaining the role of the SLEPC under the scheme, said that its objective was to involve States in the country's export effort by providing assistance to create appropriate infrastructure for the development and growth of exports. The scheme was meant for the creation of new export promotion industrial parks and zones and augmenting facilities at the existing ones, besides setting up electronic and other related infrastructure in terms of equity participation. Mr. Mathai said under the scheme, the funds for the approved projects would be sanctioned to public undertakings owned by the State and the Centre, other agencies under them, export promotion councils, commodity boards, and apex trade bodies recognised under the Exim policy of the Centre. The scheme has two components under which 80 per cent of the funds would be earmarked for allocation to the State on the basis of the approved criteria. The rest of the 20 per cent (Central component) and the unutilised portion of the funds allocated to the State in the past years would be retained by the Centre to make the necessary outlay for inter-State projects and Export Processing Zones.
