Kasturi subdues Ashwathy

VIJAYAWADA April 29 . Top seed M. Kasturi of Tamil Nadu subdued Ashwathy Balagopalan in the girls' second round of the GMC Balayogi memorial National junior chess championships at the Krishnaveni Residential Talent School here on Monday.

Ashwathy began with king pawn that converted to Kings Indian attack structure. Kasturi's aggression was revealed early by her queenside castling. She capitalised on Ashwathy's g4 on the 14th, responding with h5, thus opening up the file. Confronted with time trouble, Ashwathy's flag fell on the 25th.

Amrutha Mokal employed e4 on the second board, which N. Vinuthna combated with Sicilian Pelican variation. The latter took the initiative early in the double-edged game. On the 17th, Vinuthna obtained a piece while surrendering two pawns.

Twice the third seed came close to losing. On the 22nd she played Rg6 and lost her h pawn on the 31st. Three moves later, Mokal let go a golden opportunity to win, playing Rc3 instead of h8=Q. Vinuthna made the most of her rival's lapses to wrap up the game in 39 moves.

The eight-day meet is being organised by the Katragadda Venkatnarayana Memorial Trust and conducted by the Andhra Pradesh Chess Association.
