By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE April 29. Bangalore University (BU) has received a grant of Rs. 101.65 lakh from the Union Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, for the development of the "Bio-park" on the Jnanabharathi campus.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, K. Thimmappa, BU Vice-Chancellor, said the grant had been sanctioned to support a project on "Priority areas in plant and microbial biotechnology.'' A repository of rare and endangered plant species would be created in the Bio-park, and a germ plasm bank developed for the benefit of students. This would help teaching and research programmes in the university, he added. Dr. Thimmappa said the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Directorate of Distance Education had sanctioned development grants of Rs. 40 lakh to the BU's Directorate of Correspondence Course and Distance Education to promote an open university and distance education system. The money was to be used for developing course material, maintaining a good library, and introducing student support services and online education.

The University Department of Physics has received Rs. 64 lakh from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for strengthening the infrastructure. The UGC has granted Rs. 58.5 lakh to support an ongoing project in fluid mechanics of the Mathematics Department, Dr. Thimmappa said

He said the BU proposed to set up a remote sensing centre on the Jnanabharathi campus in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) here. Negotiations for the project were going on with ISRO, and the Geology, Geography, and Environment departments would be involved in the project, he added. Courses for M.Sc. in Electronic Media and M.Sc. in Apparel Technology were also on the anvil, and the BU proposed to start these courses with financial support from the UGC. On curriculum development, Dr. Thimmappa said the semester system would be introduced in PG courses.
