This Day That Age
Welcoming Japan as a sovereign State, the British Prime Minister, Mr. Winston Churchill, declared: "The United Kingdom, together with the United States, sponsored the Peace Treaty With Japan and was the first country to ratify the Peace Treaty. I am very glad that if falls to me, on behalf on Her Majesty's Government, to welcome Japan as a sovereign and responsible member of the community of nations which form the free world.'' As Foreign Secretary of the late Labour Government, Mr. Herbert Morrison had signed the Japanese Peace Treaty. While addressing newspaper correspondents in London, Mr. Morrison explained the former Labour Government's point of view on the Peace Treaty. Mr. Morrison said his hope was that the new and liberated Japan would be a democratic Japan. He hoped that its people would be given freedom within the wide limits of parliamentary democracy to choose the kind of democratic government and regime they wished. Queen Elizabeth's Coronation An official announcement from London said on April 28, that the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth would take place on June 2, 1953. Queen Elizabeth appointed a Coronation Commission of 36 representing the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon to help the Duke of Norfolk, hereditary Earl Marsha, to prepare for the Coronation. The Duke of Edinburgh, husband of the Queen, would be the Chairman of the Commission, the Duke of Norfolk the Deputy Chairman. His Majesty Hirohito In a message of greetings to His Majesty Hirohito, the Emperor of Japan, on the occasion of His Majesty's birthday on April 29, the President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said: "... It is India's sincere wish that the coming year may bring all happiness and prosperity to Japan in the era which has been ushered by Japan's resumption of her rightful place in the community of sovereign nations."
