Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Betrayal by BSP

Sir, — The coming together of the BJP and the BSP in Uttar Pradesh was not unexpected nor has it surprised anyone. When people like George Fernandes, Ram Vilas Paswan, Sharad Yadav and Karunanidhi could kneel before the demi-god of power, Mayawati should not be a surprise.

It is an irony that while the Samajwadi Party and the BSP could not find it easy to get along, the Dalits' party found itself comfortable with the party of high castes, the BJP.

The BSP making common cause with the BJP, vis-a-vis the stigma of Gujarat on the face of the BJP, only betrays another major section of the party's vote-bank, the Muslims. The new alignment will spell doom on the fortunes of BSP in future elections.

The present alignment has taken place despite the fact that in 1997 the BJP split the BSP and there was an exodus from the BSP to the BJP. Such an incident has failed to deter the diametrically opposite parties from coming closer.

If ideology and fairness have any place in politics, the SP and BSP should have been the natural allies against the common enemy, the BJP.

K. Malukul Azeez,

Chennai
