Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Save the fabric

Sir, — It is imperative that Parliamentarians who believe in composite multi-religious peaceful coexistence should unambiguously cast a vote of censure against the Vajpayee Government. If the Opposition does not signal this, the ruling party with its subsidiaries the RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and the ABVP will infer that emotional, physical and mental injury inflicted on the minorities as quid pro quo to right the ``wrongs'' inflicted by the Muslim ``invaders" and the ``Christian'' clergy in the past is well deserved. To ensure the correct message is inferred by the citizens, the ruling party should receive the appropriate signal from all non-BJP MPs in the form of censure over the Gujarat developments. Abstaining and voting in favour of the BJP transmits the message that the `trishul' bearing terror is in order. Our primary responsibility is to ensure the maintenance intact of the multi-ethnic, multi-religious Indian fabric. If we do not wish our country's ethos to be destroyed and fragmented, the citizens would urge all non-BJP members to join and support the motion of censure on Gujarat.

Zaheer Ahmed Sayeed,

Chennai
