Violence marks civic polls

By K. Balchand

PATNA APRIL 28. Three persons were killed, including two in police firing, and over 30 injured in violence in the first phase of civic elections in Bihar. Unofficial sources put the toll at five.

The elections witnessed an enthusiastic turnout, especially by women. Elections were held for four municipal corporations, 32 municipalities and 78 nagar panchayats (notified area committees). The voter turnout was estimated at 65 per cent. The election to the Patna Municipal Corporation has been deferred to April 30 in the light of competitive examinations being conducted today within its municipal limits.

Police opened fire in at least half a dozen places, including two in Gaya where two were killed. The brother of a woman candidate was killed last night while making crude bombs in Gaya.
