Answering supplementaries to a question on supply of textbooks, the Minister said there was no proposal to entrust distribution of textbooks to private parties and that it would be done by the Telugu Akademi.
Mr. Rao said certain cases about pirated books were being tried in the courts. He said the Akademi would also be asked to cut down overheads and rationalise prices of textbooks.
A. Vivekanda Reddy (Cong.) said the annual turnover of the pirated textbooks was estimated to be about Rs. 120 crores and this was attributable to delay in supply of books by the Akademi and the higher price of the books.
The Minister informed the House that textbooks (Group subjects) for the first and second year Intermediate are being changed from 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 respectively.
Best available school scheme: As many as 2,501 seats in 94 best available schools had been earmarked for talented boys and girls from SC and ST communities under the scheme funded by the Social welfare department.
Answering supplementaries, the Minister for Social Welfare, J.R. Pushparaj, said a State-level committee based on district committees headed by Collectors selects students.
The members complained that due to delay in release of Government grants to schools, some students were sent out of the schools.
Antarvedi as pilgrim centre: Antarvedi in East Godavari district will be developed as a tourist centre with additional facilities for pilgrims and tourists, the Minister for Tourism, T. Srinivas Yadav, told A.V. Suryanarayana Raju (TDP) and others during question time.
Project proposals with an estimated cost of Rs. 60 lakhs for the benefit of pilgrims and tourists were forwarded to the Centre for financial assistance.
Balancing reservoir: Investigations are on into a project for constructing a balancing reservoir at Panchalingala Konda in Prakasam district, the Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation K. Srihari, told D. Sivaram (TDP) during question hour.
