Govt. a catalyst in information revolution: Minister
By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 8. The Culture Minister, Mr. G. Karthikeyan, has said the Government has to act as a catalyst in furthering the information revolution of today.

Delivering the valedictory address at the 23rd All-India conference of the Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres, here on Friday, Mr. Karthikeyan said the Government role vis-a-vis the information revolution includes providing infrastructure, spreading of literacy and ensuring the spread of the public library movement. Today, Kerala is proud that it is providing human resources to various sectors in the U.S., Europe and the Middle East, he said.

Besides the Government, non-Governmental agencies too have a major role in disseminating the information culture. The State is lucky that it people are information conscious. Thanks to IT, information is today available to everyone. The large magnitudes of information available and its variety, however, have posed problems in organising the available information. IT has also given tremendous power to humanity to store, process and communicate information. Every profession of today has a rich information component, he said.

Humanity should thank all librarians for having preserved the recorded knowledge of man for the betterment of society, he added. The former professor and head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Mr. K.A. Isaac, presided over the meeting.
