THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 8. A major fire was averted tonight after the Fire Force rushed to immediately put out a blazing garbage heap outside the South gate of the Secretariat. An electric transformer near the scene escaped the fire but a few cables were burnt.

Fire Force officials said they were not sure whether the garbage heap was set ablaze or if it caught fire accidentally from a cigarette stub. Local people alerted the near by fire station at Chengalchoola and a fire tender which rushed to the spot put out the blaze in a few minutes.
