CITU condemns labour policy
By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 8. The labour policy announced by the UDF Government is but an extension of the BJP-led Union Government's globalisation-liberalisation-privatisation economic policies, according to the CITU State general secretary, Mr. P.K. Gurudasan.

In a statement issued here today, he said the Labour Minister, Mr. Babu Divakaran, had revealed that the intention of the State Government was to adopt a new approach in matters relating to industrial disputes, trade union laws and contract labour laws.

"The Union Government has decided that an industrial unit employing up to 1,000 people need not ask for the prior permission of the Government for declaring a layoff or lockout or even terminating the services of employees. Another decision is that a company can employ workers for short periods on contract basis and send them out at the conclusion of the contract period. Those terminated from service could not approach labour courts or industrial tribunals with their grievances," he said.

The Union Government had also announced its intention to amend the laws relating to contract labour. This would mean that contract workers doing jobs of a regular nature would lose all the protection they had been enjoying so far, he said.

The intentions behind the UDF Government's labour policy too were on the same lines, Mr. Gurudasan said.
