CM asks police to take stern action
By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 8. The Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, today directed the police to take stringent action against those who indulged in violence and anti-social activities whoever they were.

He said that violence took place in many parts of the State in connection with the hartal of December 6. There was reason to suspect that many of these were organised deliberately by anti-social elements.

The Chief Minister said tension was prevailing in many parts of the country ever since the commencement of the war in Afghanistan. Its ripples were felt in some parts of the State too. The Government's action alone could not defuse such tension. The perpetrators of violence and the anti-socials had to be isolated in order to maintain law and order in the State. The cooperation of all peace-lovers was required in order to see that the trouble created by these anti-socials did not affect peaceful life in any way.

He sought the help and cooperation of all peace-loving people, leaders of communities and political parties and the media for maintaining an atmosphere of peace and communal amity in the State.
