Residents plan protest
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, DEC. 8. The woeful state of the Poonamallee-Thandarai route has brought the villagers living along it to the roads in protest.
For over a decade, the residents listened to the assurances by officials that the 12-km national highway road stretch would be ``repaired soon.''
Now, members of women self-help groups will also join the protest. They will observe a one-day fast near the Poonamallee Block Development Office on December 10 to demand their right to proper roads.
The road, they told presspersons on Saturday, was crucial to their daily activities especially when commuting to schools, hospitals and work. Buses and autorickshaws refused to ply on the route because of its poor condition, they said.
More than 10,000 people reside in about 10 villages that lie along the stretch.
