We wouldn't have taken harsh steps, says DMK chief
By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, DEC. 8. The recent increase in the prices of essentials has given an opportunity for the DMK to explain to the people the consequences of its not coming back to power.

The partymen should drive home this message, the president, Mr.M.Karunanidhi said here today.

In a statement, the DMK leader said his Government would not have resorted to such harsh measures that too at one stroke had it been voted back to power.

No doubt, the DMK, while in power, had also increased power tariff, bus fare and milk prices.

But on all occasions, the Government saw to it that the hike was not steep.

It would have effected measures to improve the finances in a phased manner so that the common man did not feel the pinch. ``Certainly, it would not even think of reintroducing cheap liquor''nor would it have deprived government employees of the perquisites, they had been enjoying for long, the statement noted.
