Vaas sends Zimbabwe crashing to worst-ever defeat

COLOMBO, DEC. 8. In one of the most spectacular collapses in limited overs cricket, Zimbabwe was bowled out for 38 runs, after being put into bat, against Sri Lanka on Saturday as fast bowler Chaminda Vaas ripped through the visitors' defences.

The left-arm fast bowler took the first hat-trick by a Sri Lankan in one-day cricket against Zimbabwe as he claimed a record eight wickets for 19 runs. Sri Lanka needed only 4.2 overs to notch up 40 for one for one of the easiest victories in the game.

Zimbabwe tumbled in just 15.4 overs and 87 minutes, a score that eclipsed the previous lowest of 43 by Pakistan against West Indies at Cape Town in 1993.

Since the first match in Australia in 1972, cricket has witnessed 1,176 limited overs matches worldwide.

Vaas exploited the early morning moisture well and swung the white ball prodigiously to beat team-mate Muttiah Muralitharan's previous world record of seven for 30 against India at Sharjah in 2001.

``I am extremely happy with the hat-trick,'' Vaas said after the match. ``I have got my rhythm back and I am able to move the ball better.'' - AP

Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas, who destroyed Zimbabwe with a sensational spell of fast bowling, appeals succesfully for a leg-before decision against Heath Steak in the opening match of the tri-series at Colombo on Saturday. Vaas had an hat-trick in his world record figures of 8 for 19 as the visitors were skittled out for the lowest ever one-day International score of 38.
