Kasparov leads Kramnik
By Our Chess Correspondent

MOSCOW, DEC. 8. World No.1 ranked Garry Kasparov leads Braingames world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik 4-3 after seven games in the Botvinnik Memorial chess being played here at the House of Columns on Friday.

In phase two of their 20-match series, three rapid games were played and Kramnik enjoyed playing white in two and Kasparov one. Kasparov won the fifth match game and drew the other two to lead by 4-3.

Earlier, the four classical chess games did not produce any spark and were drawn. Ten blitz games and three rapid games remain to be played in the 20-match assorted time control match.

In a flurry of tactical activity that followed move 24 of game five, Kasparov prevailed, winning two pieces for a rook to draw first blood in the match dominated by drawn encounters.

Having accepted the queen's gambit, Kasparov as black won the first rapid game to take a 3-2 lead in 54 moves with the black pieces.

In the sixth game, Kasparov as white faced the Nimzo- Indian defence from Kramnik and drew in 30 moves after reaching a level rook and minor piece ending.

In the last game of the day, Kasparov played the Slav defence with the black pieces and went into a pawn ending.

All Kramnik was able to drive was an extra pawn and in the king and pawn ending, Kasparov got the opposition to draw the game after 62 long moves for a highly beneficial day.
