Left parties want restoration of Periyar Centre
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, DEC. 8. The Left parties today protested the demolition of the Periyar Centre at Bamnauli here and demanded its reconstruction.
Expressing concern over the demolition, the CPI(M) general-secretary, Mr. Harkishan Singh Surjeet, said it was distressing to note that ``such shabby treatment was meted out to the Periyar Centre promoted by the Dravida Kazhakam for the purpose of propagating humanistic and rationalistic ideals of Periyar, one of the greatest Indian reformers that the 20th Century has produced''.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, he expressed surprise as to how the Delhi Development Authority had acted in ``such a haste'' to demolish a building which was not being used for commercial purposes.
``An impression has been created that the demolition had some other motivation stemming from the public statement issued by Shri Subramanian Swamy, who has claimed that the Centre was being misused by LTTE persons. I express strong protest against such false charges,'' he said. The CPI(M) also demanded an inquiry into the matter and action against the guilty.
The CPI said the reasons given by the DDA for the demolition were not convincing. The Centre, named after one of the greatest social reformers of the country, was providing IT education to students from poor and downtrodden families, besides spreading the ideals of social equality. The DDA should have taken all this into consideration, the party said.
The CPI urged the Delhi Government and the authorities concerned to extend necessary help to rebuild the Centre so that it could carry on its constructive work.
