Portraits of the most wanted
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, DEC. 8. Computers have come in handy for the police to solve sensational murder cases. Karnataka police are using the ``Portrait Software'' from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to build portraits of suspects from descriptions given by eye-witnesses.
In the Ashoka Hotel murder that took place in May this year, the police painstakingly assembled a portrait from descriptions given by the hotel staff and other witnesses. This was later found to match the pictures extracted from the closed- circuit TV film by the Chennai police and the accused, Sandeep Sen, was arrested within weeks.
Another case was that of ``Biscuit Raghu'' who used to give drugged biscuits to passengers on trains in North Karnataka and take away their valuables. During 2000-01, the Karnataka police used the software to build portraits of 231 suspects in 180 crimes. The software is now used in all district police headquarters and colour portraits closely resembling suspects will soon become possible. The ``wanted'' posters with pictures and descriptions can be sent fast to all police stations and help to trace even suspects whose photographs are not available in criminal records.
