Speight loses MP seat

SUVA, DEC. 8. Mr. George Speight, Fiji's coup plotter, who won a seat in Parliament three months ago while in custody was today stripped of the position after the Speaker, Mr. Epeli Nailatikau, declined an application to grant him leave.

Any member of Parliament absent for two successive sessions of the House, without permission, loses his or her seat.

The decision, which came at the end of an extended second session, means the troubled Pacific nation will face a byelection which Mr. Speight, as he has not been convicted of any crime, can again contest.
