Ministry bows to NCP demand

SHILLONG, NOV.6. Bowing to the key coalition partner, the Nationalist Congress Party, the E.K.Mawlong ministry in Meghalaya today ordered a judicial probe into the controversial joint venture between the State Government and a private builder prompting the NCP to withdraw its threat to pull the rug. Mr. Mawlong told reporters here that he had written to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to appoint a sitting judge to inquire into the deal for construction of a multi-storey building at the site of the `Meghalaya house' in Kolkata. The deal has triggered fierce opposition from the NCP, BJP and some other constituents of the ruling alliance, the Meghalaya Parliamentary Forum and was shelved on November 3 under pressure from the NCP, which has 15 MLAs in the 41-strong MPF coalition in the 60-member Assembly. Mr. Mawlong said he requested the Chief Justice to ensure completion of the inquiry within one month from the time of appointment of the judge.

When newsmen asked the NCP legislature party leader and Programme Implementation Minister Mr.Lotsing Sangma over the other demand by his party for action against the General Administration Minister, Mr. Nimarson Momin, officials of his department and the Chief Secretary,Mr.J.P. Singh, the Chief Minister shot back ``why do you want to know all the details ?''.
