Siddharth ousts Abhimanyu
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, NOV. 6. Siddharth Suchde of Maharashtra clinically
demolished the power game of top seed Abhimanyu Jain of Delhi to
emerge a creditable winner in an under-19 boys quarterfinal match
of the India Cements-National sub-junior/junior squash
championship at the SDAT-India Cements Academy here on Tuesday.
Two years ago he won the National under-14 title and then left
the country for studies in Scotland. The wiry tuned up his talent
to be a highly noticeable player in the Scottish league.
All the powerful drives and the delicate drops never missed
Suchde's racket. In effect once Suchde got over that brief phase
of tentativeness in the opening stanza, the Maharashtra lad
thrived on Abhimanyu's mistakes. A frustrated Abhimanyu, who has
the experience of playing in the Asian junior circuit could not
have gone through a more miserable moment in his career. He could
but collect just two points in three games!
Suchde's performance was the talk of the third day's proceedings
for he had scalped the top seed. Three other seeds fell in the
boys' section. Fourth seed Anurag Gill was unable to make the
most of a two-game lead against Vikas Jangra (Mah) in the under-
17 section. Jangra is a former under-15 champion.
Then there was this Daly College boy from Indore, Fateh Singh,
who eclipsed the second seeded Gautam Kalani (Mah) in four games
in under-15 section. For Jay Dalal (Mah), the fourth seed in
under-13 section, an upset tummy ended his run in the
championship, Laxman Joshi (Mah) being the beneficiary.
Totally lacking in quality in comparison was the competition in
the girls' section where in view of the just eight players in the
under-19 section, the top two Joshna Chinappa and Vaidehi Reddy
have been given bye to the semifinals and will take the court
only tomorrow.
