Strange conclusions
Sir, - Mr. George Mathew's letter (Nov. 3) is a classic case of
linking diverse issues to draw strange conclusions.
RSS fanaticism has hardly anything to do with America's choice of
Pakistan as its cohort in its campaign against terrorism. The
factors which influenced its choice were geography and Pakistan's
proximity to the Taliban leadership. It was aimed at trying out
the age-old tactic of trapping a thief by setting off another in
his pursuit.

Sir, - Mr. Mathew's view that Pakistan was given preference by
the U.S. because India antagonised Christians, is wrong. India
stuck to its non-aligned principles even in the Cold War days,
much to the discomfiture of the U.S. and was never the chosen
friend of America.
It is because of Pakistan's geographical advantage that it was
given preference despite America's lingering suspicion about
dealing with a nation known for its open support and sympathy to
the Taliban.
C.R. Narayanan,
Cuddalore, T.N.
